Style Insider: My Summer Must-Haves (Part 1)

The sun is shining, beach-inspired cocktails are calling and summer is shimmering on the horizon. When it comes to building a well-edited wardrobe, what’s more fun than stocking up on some of the hottest warm-weather essentials.

We sought out a few of the town’s most notable fashion insiders - Ryan Beshel, Alexis Cozzini, Ikram Goldman, Azeeza Kahn, and Erica Strama - to discuss their lust-lists, from the perfect statement necklace to mink-lined bejeweled Birkenstocks.

We kick off our summer style series with bow tie-loving bon vivant Ryan Beshel:

Ryan Beshel
Public Relations Coordinator
900 North Michigan Shops

Summer calls for light and bright - and this Karen Millen floral-inspired cotton dress is just what the weather woman ordered. A pop of floral print over this classic white cotton is perfect for the office or for play.

Prep your feet for summer strutting with a visit to Charles David. This Terrain Patent Wedge screams summer and you'll be rockin' a splash of orange, the color of the season.

As the sun begins to warm the chilly Chicago beaches, the bathing suit makes its way back into our closets. A visit to Intimacy Bra Fit Stylists is where you will find the hottest suits under the sun. This nautical look will turn heads at the beach and you feel like a million bucks knowing it's hugging you in all the right places.

We're not quite finished with neon yet - and neither is  Michael Kors. Make a bold statement with this Jet Set Perforated Travel Tote as you strut down Michigan Avenue like it's your very own runway. After all, you're so front row.

When it comes to summery sunnies, I say go big or go home. A quick visit to Solstice Sunglass Boutique for these optical kicks by Dior will keep you undercover when checking out those beach bodies.

Singled Out (Part 1): Meet 17 of the most notable single-for-the-moment Chicagoans

Summer’s tropical temps may be heading straight to South Beach but we’re not worried – our horoscope, courtesy of Vanity Fair, informs us that a probable romance will keep us sweltering through spring.

While the heralding in of a new relationship couldn’t keep us from blowing our budget on an expensive statement coat – Mulberry’s fur-inspired jackets top our must-have list – it did motivate us to book a trip into the city’s A-list, singles scene.

Faux fur-inspired coats from
Mulberry's Fall/Winter '12 collection

Inspired, Luxe File Chicago culled seventeen of the city’s most successful, stand-out singles – ranging from models and media mavens to Hells Kitchen contenders. Here, they dish on bucket lists and their favorite romantic destinations to the pick-up lines you couldn’t pay them to say.

Let's begin with the boys! (Listed alphabeti- cally)

Dan Balanoff
Attorney
Balanoff & Associates
Nest: Lincoln Park

One of the greatest lawyers in literature, Atticus Finch, once said you never really understand a person until you climb inside their skin and take it for a test drive. Dan Balanoff, a successful attorney with his own general practice, can scratch that off his professional bucket list. After graduating from John Marshall Law School, Balanoff volunteered at a legal aid organization helping low-income Chicago residents with their legal needs. When he isn’t demanding the truth in the courtroom, the hunky lawdog is holding court at the city’s classiest watering holes.

Describe your job in 140 characters: As an attorney, I fall somewhere between Perry Mason and Dan Fielding. I operate a general practice firm that serves the needs of everyday Chicagoans.

Your proudest personal or professional accomplishment: Running a successful practice that affords me the freedom to pursue and enjoy a wonderful life.

Canada's girl-next-door,
Elisha Cuthbert

Your Hollywood/Historical crush: Hands down Elisha Cuthbert. She’s a sexy tomboy who loves hockey and looks amazing in anything.

You’re feeling romantic. How do you like to set the mood: A picnic blanket in the park, country music on the radio, cuddling and soft kisses under a starlit Chicago sky. Save the rose petals and chocolates for your next trip to Sybaris.

Describe your dream girl in three words: Blondes, brunettes and redheads. Wait is that four words?

Dream date à trois

Favorite first-date romantic destination: A moonlit stroll along the river. There’s something about being on a bridge that puts people in the mood to smooch.

First date uniform: It really depends on the locale but as a rule: cocktail casual.

Ryan Beshel
PR Coordinator
900 North Michigan Shops
Nest:  Ravenswood

Ryan Beshel has an uncanny knack for sticking out in a crowd. Iconic for his colorful bowties, casual couture and chic specs, Beshel is also the PR pitchman for one of the city’s most glamorous shopping destinations, 900 North Michigan Shops. And he’s tall. Measuring in at a modelesque 6’4”, the former Agency Galatea model scout knows how to create a buzz even when he’s making a scene.

Describe your job in 140 characters: Constant connection, outreach, and follow-up to promote 900 North Michigan Shops as the ultimate shopping destination with its stellar lineup of top-tier retailers and fine dining restaurants.

What personal trait(s) gives you the most confidence: My height. At 6’ 4”, I am usually the tallest guy in the room, which can be quite a confidence booster.  I also appreciate dressing well: the perfect outfit is the ultimate head-turner.

What do you do when you want to impress someone: Squire him to one of my favorite hangouts for some extra-special VIP treatment.

You’ve just joined an online dating site. Describe your perfect mate: I like someone who has drive and passion for their work. He should have a great  sense of humor and a good sense of style. A tall, stocky guy with a bit of scruff will automatically move to the front of the line!

Your Hollywood/Historical crush: Tom Ford.

Tom Ford

Describe your first date uniform: A nice pair of jeans, good shoes, and a well-fitted cardigan or tailored blazer. I might add a pocket square as a whimsical afterthought.

You’re feeling romantic. How do you like to set the mood: Invite him over for an intimate, at-home date. Play his favorite music, prepare his favorite drink, and cook a meal he loves together.

Set the mood with
hand-crafted cocktails

Describe your dream guy in three words: Social, successful, and silly.

Frank Holland
Anchor/Reporter
WGN-TV
Nest: South Loop

Frank Holland has a face for television. More than just editorial eye candy, Holland is all business when it comes to co-anchoring the morning news. From reporting live at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, to hitting the Chicago streets for powerful soundbites, Holland gives us a great reason to wake up extra early on weekdays. We’re not sure about Holland’s on-air beauty secret - looking handsome at 4:00 a.m. – but we’re tuning in to find out.

Describe your job in 140 characters: Reporter/Anchor. I spend a lot of time researching, making phone calls, writing, and returning phone calls. I spend a little bit on camera. It’s a dream job.

What personal trait(s) gives you the most confidence: My resilience. I can always hear my mom say, “Tough times don’t last. Tough people do.”

Words of Wisdom

Your proudest personal or professional accomplishment: I think it’s actually coming up. But I don’t want to jinx it.

Your Hollywood/Historical crush: Alicia Keys.

Alicia Keys: Singer, songwriter,
and fan favorite

Describe your first date uniform: Casual. I want to feel comfortable.

Name one item on your bucket list: Tour Africa and see the diversity of people, cultures and environment throughout the entire continent.

 Cape Town, South Africa

You’re feeling romantic. How do you like to set the mood: I crank Usher, Trey Songz, Drake, Alicia Key, Erykah Badu, and a little Chris Brown.

Describe your dream girl/guy in three words: Smart, funny, and gorgeous.

Jonny Imerman
Testicular Cancer Survivor
Chief Mission Officer, Imerman Angels
Nest: Streeterville

When Imerman Angels founder, cancer survivor and media darling, Jonny Imerman walks into a room, most people are compelled to bow at his feet. While he isn’t a royal (neither was Prince Charming), Imerman’s tireless contributions to raise awareness and help those touched by cancer borders on knighthood.

Describe your job in 140 characters: I beat the drum about Imerman Angels and articulate our 1-on-1 cancer support mission. Find cancer survivors who can be angels to help others, find families in need with cancer, and build relationships with cancer partners.

Imerman's Errand

What personal trait(s) gives you the most confidence: When I believe in something, I won't stop talking about it. What gives me confidence is building brands that make the world a better place.

What do you do when you want to impress someone: I believe being open and showing vulnerability are the keys to connecting with others.

Your Hollywood/Historical crush: Sandra Bullock. Super cute but, more importantly, she's kind.

Describe your dream girl in three words: Kind, passionate, and giving.

You’re feeling romantic. How do you like to set the mood: Humor. It's easy and requires no planning.

Name one item on your bucket list: I'd like to create more charitable organizations like Imerman Angels and help make the world a better place.

Luke Jensen
Co-Founder
YouSwoop.com
Nest: River North

Meditation sailing. Helicopter jumping. Sushipalooza (ok we made that up, but it sounds awfully tempting). We love to mix a great deal with a splash of luxury and Luke Jensen is the go-to guy who satiates our coupon-clipping appetite with the click of a mouse. As the brain behind YouSwoop.com, Chicago’s whimsically-written, daily deal provider, Jensen not only knows which trends inspire his virtual flock, but also practices what he pitches: living the fabulous life one day – and Bikram yoga class – at a time.

Describe your job in 140 characters: I’m living the dream: helping to change the world through my work. YouSwoop.com is a platform to make that change.

What personal trait(s) gives you the most confidence: A positive attitude.

What is your favorite activity: I’m very active and love all forms of exercise especially yoga.

Pose Perfect

Your Hollywood/Historical crush: Natalie Portman. She’s gorgeous, smart, works hard, and has a nice soul.

You’re feeling romantic. How do you like to set the mood: Scented candles, soft music, good wine, and eye contact.

The one little secret you would never divulge to a girl, but your mother/BFF gladly would: I was in a boy band.

Describe your dream girl in three words: Healthy, deep, and driven.

Favorite first-date romantic destination: A walk along the Chicago River after a nice dinner.

Name one item on your bucket list: Swim with Great White sharks.

Nice knowing you, Luke! #justkidding

Luxe File ♥s: Fashion's Night Out '11

It's torture. Summer's given notice without barely a backward glance, our tans are fading at the speed of Mickey Rourke's career and every piece of chalk-colored clothing we own has been banished to the back of our closets with all the other little monsters. Luckily, we have the perfect excuse to keep breathing: Fashion's Night Out (FNO).

Originally inspired by style titan Anna Wintour, this one-night-only, after-hours shopping extravaganza will sweep shoppers off their stilettos with an exciting array of style-studded events, from fashion shows and VIP lounges to beauty makeovers and tastings. (Too many to list, check out Luxe File's favs at the bottom.)

Vogue magazine's editor-in-chief and
Fashion's NIght Out creator, Anna Wintour

Luxe File checked-in with some of the city's top style setters, and a few of our favorite fashionistos, to see which FNO fêtes they'd be attending and, more importantly!, the designer duds they'd be rocking on the red carpets. Here's what some of them had to say:

Kiran Advani
Fashion Programming Director, The Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture

Parties she's attending: This year Chicago has gone all out for Fashion's Night Out (FNO) and there really are too many amazing events to pick just one to attend. This night gets me especially excited and starts my countdown for Fashion Focus Chicago, happening October 17-23, 2011.

I also plan to spend the day and night supporting local designers and independent retailers as much as possible, while also making appearances at stores where my friends are hosting haute happenings. I start FNO at Saks Fifth Avenue for the ribbon-cutting with Chicago's very own, Brian Atwood, of the new 10022-SHOE designer shoe salon.

Then I'm off to a FNO luncheon at Balsan to preview the second location of Perchance at the Elysian a week prior to the boutique's opening. In the evening, I'll be visiting with the Chicago Fashion Incubator 2011-12 Designers In Residence at Macy's while they're working away in the State Street windows.

Fashion design intern, Alex Chandoha
"works the window" at Macy's State Street

I'm ending the night at little bit closer to home in Bucktown and stopping by to support my friend Dana Weiss (aka "The Possessionista"), who is hosting FNO at Cynthia Rowley. She's also an alum of the School of the Art Institute Chicago!

Agga B's Two-Tone Cape Dress

What she's wearing: I try and do my best to support local as much as possible, so I'll be donning Chicago designers head-to-toe. My dress for FNO is an all-black crepe wool blend mini by Agga B. For jewelry, I'll have my Lauren Joy necklace by Dana Rebecca Designs on, as I do everyday!, and a set of bracelets I just purchased from Erin Gordon. I'll most likely be carrying all my essentials for FNO in an envelope style clutch by Bocue and my toes will be rocking a pair of purple pumps from B by Brian Atwood.

Bianca Alexander
Executive Producer, Vert Couture Eco-Fashion Show (10/20/11)

Parties she's attending: I'll be attending the Chicago Fashion Incubator Trunk Show and Window at MACY's on State Street to support Kahindo Mateene of Modahnik, a fair trade designer from Conscious Living TV's Vert Couture eco-fashion show culminating Fashion Focus Chicago 2010.

What she's wearing: I'll likely be wearing a sleek metallic gold bamboo pantsuit from Hollywood eco-couture designer, Linda Loudermilk, who outfits A-list stars like Debra Messing, Jennifer Beals, Jane Fonda and Robert Downey Jr.

Green Never Looked So Good:
Linda Loudermilk's bamboo and silk dresses

Alternatively, I'll wear a look from one of this year's Vert Couture 2011 designers, who you can see live on the conscious catwalk in the tents at Millennium Park on Thursday, October 20 during Chicago Fashion Week. Get your VIP tickets now to this signature event to stay on top of what's hot for next season!

Ryan Beshel
Director of Runway, Agency Galatea

Parties he's attending: I'm heading to The 900 Shops FNO event to support my Agency Galatea models - they're walking in the flash fashion show. Brad Goreski will be there, too!

Plank Bowtie

What he's wearing: Cheap. Geek. Chic. I'm wearing a gray suit blazer from H&M, a black vest from French Connection, a red plaid shirt from Urban Outfitters, good old Levis jeans, a wooden and black leather bowtie (believe it!) from a company called Plank and Allen Edmond shoes.

Philip Chang

Parties he's attending: Twist my rubber arm; I'm going to Vince at 106 E. Oak Street from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Every party needs champagne and every future fashion icon knows the value of a stylist, so when you get here, be seen with bubbles. And meet April Francis of Haute Closet, who wants to make sense of her world and understand yours, too.

Eric Kipp: What refinement looks like

What he's wearing: If you catch a glimpse of a heat-seeking bachelor in an Eric Kipp custom suit and perforated Prada dress shoes, then my cover's been blown. Introduce yourself while you still can.

Candace Jordan

Parties she's attending: The Brian Atwood event at Saks Fifth Avenue and the VIP party at the 900 Shops. I am proud to be on the committees for both. I will also be filming the fashion scene for my new internet show, Social Circles, on www.Watch312.com!

Brian Atwood and his leading ladies

What she's wearing: Probably some new stuff from TOPSHOP, bangles, maybe leopard-print pants with a black cashmere seater and Brian Atwood heels, of course!

Lara Miller
Designer & Founder, Lara Miller Ltd.
Executive Director, Chicago Fashion Incubator at Macy's on State Street

Parties she's attending: For most of the night, I will be at Macy's on State Street to celebrate the 2011 Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) Designers in Residence (DIR). I'll be selling the limited edition 2011 CFI t-shirt on the 3rd floor of Macy's on State and the CFI DIR will have their pieces on display in a trunk show on the 3rd floor as well. The most exciting thing the DIR will be doing is bringing the window on Washington and State Streets to life as they drape, sew, sketch, and work in the windows. The designers will be going back and forth from the 3rd floor to the windows to meet customers. It'll be a great night!

Organza Marissa Circle Skirt by Lara Miller

I'm also going to try to stop by Cerato Boutique to celebrate some of the best in local fashion! My garments will be there even if I can't make it! I'd also like to do my best to stop by 900 N. Michigan's party.

What she's wearing: Definitely the limited edition CFI t-shirt! During the day, I'll wear the organic cotton hemp Bahar pants in gray or black from my collection and in the evening, I'll change into my silk organza Marissa skirt and the Prada black loafers my mother gave me.

Kelly Ryan O'Brien
Founder and Principal, Chicago Blogger Network

Parties she's attending: Both of the Chicago Blogger Network-sponsored events which include parties at the Shops at North Bridge and Cynthia Rowley's boutique in Wicker Park featuring @possessionista’s Dana Weiss. For more information about the Shops at North Bridge event, click HERE. For more information about the Cynthia Rowley event, click HERE.

Gotta Dash! It's a Blog Bash!

What she’s wearing: I don't know yet! I am heading over to new TOPSHOP on Michigan Avenue to visit the very fabulous Melissa Muoio (a friend whom I suggested to TOPSHOP for their personal stylist position and she got it!) who is going to dress me for the event.

Amanda Puck
EVP, Public Relations, XA The Experiential Agency

What parties she's attending: I am on the host committee for 900’s Night Out: Fame, Fashion and Flavor with Brad Goreski!

Bananas! Bravo TV's "It's a Brad Brad World" star,
Brad Goreski, at 900 North Michigan Shops

What she's wearing: I have no idea! I am usually a last minute dresser – I love the stress, but I will try and rock it!

Raijean Stroud
Blogger/Editor, Swa-Rai

Parties she's attending: I'm in New York for Fashion's Night Out this year. I will be attending FNO events at Bergdorf's, DVF, Target Pop-Up store featuring Missoni, Diesel, Coach, Bryant Park and more!

Sweet and NO Cavities: Furla's Candy Bag

What she's wearing: My green Missoni dress, Louboutin shoes, and a Furla Candy Bag.

Dana Weiss

Parties she's attending: I'll be hosting the event at Cynthia Rowley's boutique on Damen Avenue.

Fashion 9-1-1: The Possessionista gives guests
a fashion fix at Cynthia Rowley

What she's wearing: I'll be wearing Cynthia Rowley (head to toe).

Jehan Yasmin

Parties she's attending: I will be attending the Macy's State Street, 900 North Michigan Shops, and Water Tower shops events and the "Calm Before the Storm" fashion show at the Drake Hotel.

Haute Night: "Calm" showcases the unique fashions
of twelve up-and-coming Chicago designers

What she's wearing: I'll be wearing a ruffled black and white top, with a hot pink mini, black satin peep-toe shoes with a hint of pink at the open sole, and silver hoop earring with silver bangles.
