Luxe File ♥s: Fashion's Night Out '11

It's torture. Summer's given notice without barely a backward glance, our tans are fading at the speed of Mickey Rourke's career and every piece of chalk-colored clothing we own has been banished to the back of our closets with all the other little monsters. Luckily, we have the perfect excuse to keep breathing: Fashion's Night Out (FNO).

Originally inspired by style titan Anna Wintour, this one-night-only, after-hours shopping extravaganza will sweep shoppers off their stilettos with an exciting array of style-studded events, from fashion shows and VIP lounges to beauty makeovers and tastings. (Too many to list, check out Luxe File's favs at the bottom.)

Vogue magazine's editor-in-chief and
Fashion's NIght Out creator, Anna Wintour

Luxe File checked-in with some of the city's top style setters, and a few of our favorite fashionistos, to see which FNO fĂȘtes they'd be attending and, more importantly!, the designer duds they'd be rocking on the red carpets. Here's what some of them had to say:

Kiran Advani
Fashion Programming Director, The Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture

Parties she's attending: This year Chicago has gone all out for Fashion's Night Out (FNO) and there really are too many amazing events to pick just one to attend. This night gets me especially excited and starts my countdown for Fashion Focus Chicago, happening October 17-23, 2011.

I also plan to spend the day and night supporting local designers and independent retailers as much as possible, while also making appearances at stores where my friends are hosting haute happenings. I start FNO at Saks Fifth Avenue for the ribbon-cutting with Chicago's very own, Brian Atwood, of the new 10022-SHOE designer shoe salon.

Then I'm off to a FNO luncheon at Balsan to preview the second location of Perchance at the Elysian a week prior to the boutique's opening. In the evening, I'll be visiting with the Chicago Fashion Incubator 2011-12 Designers In Residence at Macy's while they're working away in the State Street windows.

Fashion design intern, Alex Chandoha
"works the window" at Macy's State Street

I'm ending the night at little bit closer to home in Bucktown and stopping by to support my friend Dana Weiss (aka "The Possessionista"), who is hosting FNO at Cynthia Rowley. She's also an alum of the School of the Art Institute Chicago!

Agga B's Two-Tone Cape Dress

What she's wearing: I try and do my best to support local as much as possible, so I'll be donning Chicago designers head-to-toe. My dress for FNO is an all-black crepe wool blend mini by Agga B. For jewelry, I'll have my Lauren Joy necklace by Dana Rebecca Designs on, as I do everyday!, and a set of bracelets I just purchased from Erin Gordon. I'll most likely be carrying all my essentials for FNO in an envelope style clutch by Bocue and my toes will be rocking a pair of purple pumps from B by Brian Atwood.

Bianca Alexander
Executive Producer, Vert Couture Eco-Fashion Show (10/20/11)

Parties she's attending: I'll be attending the Chicago Fashion Incubator Trunk Show and Window at MACY's on State Street to support Kahindo Mateene of Modahnik, a fair trade designer from Conscious Living TV's Vert Couture eco-fashion show culminating Fashion Focus Chicago 2010.

What she's wearing: I'll likely be wearing a sleek metallic gold bamboo pantsuit from Hollywood eco-couture designer, Linda Loudermilk, who outfits A-list stars like Debra Messing, Jennifer Beals, Jane Fonda and Robert Downey Jr.

Green Never Looked So Good:
Linda Loudermilk's bamboo and silk dresses

Alternatively, I'll wear a look from one of this year's Vert Couture 2011 designers, who you can see live on the conscious catwalk in the tents at Millennium Park on Thursday, October 20 during Chicago Fashion Week. Get your VIP tickets now to this signature event to stay on top of what's hot for next season!

Ryan Beshel
Director of Runway, Agency Galatea

Parties he's attending: I'm heading to The 900 Shops FNO event to support my Agency Galatea models - they're walking in the flash fashion show. Brad Goreski will be there, too!

Plank Bowtie

What he's wearing: Cheap. Geek. Chic. I'm wearing a gray suit blazer from H&M, a black vest from French Connection, a red plaid shirt from Urban Outfitters, good old Levis jeans, a wooden and black leather bowtie (believe it!) from a company called Plank and Allen Edmond shoes.

Philip Chang

Parties he's attending: Twist my rubber arm; I'm going to Vince at 106 E. Oak Street from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Every party needs champagne and every future fashion icon knows the value of a stylist, so when you get here, be seen with bubbles. And meet April Francis of Haute Closet, who wants to make sense of her world and understand yours, too.

Eric Kipp: What refinement looks like

What he's wearing: If you catch a glimpse of a heat-seeking bachelor in an Eric Kipp custom suit and perforated Prada dress shoes, then my cover's been blown. Introduce yourself while you still can.

Candace Jordan

Parties she's attending: The Brian Atwood event at Saks Fifth Avenue and the VIP party at the 900 Shops. I am proud to be on the committees for both. I will also be filming the fashion scene for my new internet show, Social Circles, on www.Watch312.com!

Brian Atwood and his leading ladies

What she's wearing: Probably some new stuff from TOPSHOP, bangles, maybe leopard-print pants with a black cashmere seater and Brian Atwood heels, of course!

Lara Miller
Designer & Founder, Lara Miller Ltd.
Executive Director, Chicago Fashion Incubator at Macy's on State Street

Parties she's attending: For most of the night, I will be at Macy's on State Street to celebrate the 2011 Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) Designers in Residence (DIR). I'll be selling the limited edition 2011 CFI t-shirt on the 3rd floor of Macy's on State and the CFI DIR will have their pieces on display in a trunk show on the 3rd floor as well. The most exciting thing the DIR will be doing is bringing the window on Washington and State Streets to life as they drape, sew, sketch, and work in the windows. The designers will be going back and forth from the 3rd floor to the windows to meet customers. It'll be a great night!

Organza Marissa Circle Skirt by Lara Miller

I'm also going to try to stop by Cerato Boutique to celebrate some of the best in local fashion! My garments will be there even if I can't make it! I'd also like to do my best to stop by 900 N. Michigan's party.

What she's wearing: Definitely the limited edition CFI t-shirt! During the day, I'll wear the organic cotton hemp Bahar pants in gray or black from my collection and in the evening, I'll change into my silk organza Marissa skirt and the Prada black loafers my mother gave me.

Kelly Ryan O'Brien
Founder and Principal, Chicago Blogger Network

Parties she's attending: Both of the Chicago Blogger Network-sponsored events which include parties at the Shops at North Bridge and Cynthia Rowley's boutique in Wicker Park featuring @possessionista’s Dana Weiss. For more information about the Shops at North Bridge event, click HERE. For more information about the Cynthia Rowley event, click HERE.

Gotta Dash! It's a Blog Bash!

What she’s wearing: I don't know yet! I am heading over to new TOPSHOP on Michigan Avenue to visit the very fabulous Melissa Muoio (a friend whom I suggested to TOPSHOP for their personal stylist position and she got it!) who is going to dress me for the event.

Amanda Puck
EVP, Public Relations, XA The Experiential Agency

What parties she's attending: I am on the host committee for 900’s Night Out: Fame, Fashion and Flavor with Brad Goreski!

Bananas! Bravo TV's "It's a Brad Brad World" star,
Brad Goreski, at 900 North Michigan Shops

What she's wearing: I have no idea! I am usually a last minute dresser – I love the stress, but I will try and rock it!

Raijean Stroud
Blogger/Editor, Swa-Rai

Parties she's attending: I'm in New York for Fashion's Night Out this year. I will be attending FNO events at Bergdorf's, DVF, Target Pop-Up store featuring Missoni, Diesel, Coach, Bryant Park and more!

Sweet and NO Cavities: Furla's Candy Bag

What she's wearing: My green Missoni dress, Louboutin shoes, and a Furla Candy Bag.

Dana Weiss

Parties she's attending: I'll be hosting the event at Cynthia Rowley's boutique on Damen Avenue.

Fashion 9-1-1: The Possessionista gives guests
a fashion fix at Cynthia Rowley

What she's wearing: I'll be wearing Cynthia Rowley (head to toe).

Jehan Yasmin

Parties she's attending: I will be attending the Macy's State Street, 900 North Michigan Shops, and Water Tower shops events and the "Calm Before the Storm" fashion show at the Drake Hotel.

Haute Night: "Calm" showcases the unique fashions
of twelve up-and-coming Chicago designers

What she's wearing: I'll be wearing a ruffled black and white top, with a hot pink mini, black satin peep-toe shoes with a hint of pink at the open sole, and silver hoop earring with silver bangles.

Ultimate Premarital Pow Wow: "I Do...From Vows to Reality"

John Hassey, one of Chicago's leading marriage advocates and relationship experts, hosts an interactive workshop on September 25 to provide couples and newlyweds with insider tips and tools essential for marital B-L-I-S-S.

What does a happy marriage look like? Can two people with similar goals and values enjoy a lifetime of stability and can a couple with polar personalities actually build a truly sustainable foundation? John Hassey, who's one of Chicago's top premarital and family counselors and a divorce mediator and ordained minister to boot, thinks anything is possible.

Ah, L'Amor!: How Love Should Look

"Marriage is not necessarily about what you do, or do not, have in common,” says Hassey. “If a couple cannot negotiate the challenges and pitfalls that come during married life, they may find themselves on the road to breakup.”

Relationship Whiz: John Hassey

Over the past few years, Hassey has spent hundreds of hours counseling couples with a simple goal: build love and trust and elevate intimacy. In his counseling sessions, he works through his clients’ emotional issues, helps them tackle adversity and remove the barriers that block verbal and emotional expression.

"Most of the couples I counsel truly believe they are entering into their unions on a sure footing, but many lack the two basic fundamentals for maintaining long-term relationships: communicating with clarity and managing conflict.”

Relationship RX: Get the skills for a healthy relationship

On Sunday, September 25, the relationship aficionado will host "I Do...From Vows to Reality" at The James Hotel in Chicago from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In this one-day workshop, couples and newlyweds will learn how to enhance their relationships by boosting their communication skills, troubleshoot their way through conflict and overcome avoidance issues.

Prior to the workshop, couples will complete an in-depth, online relationship evaluation which covers nine key categories, ranging from communication and conflict resolution to financial management and spiritual beliefs. The evaluation will provide each couple with tangible results and areas to focus on for improving their relationship.

Communication Underload: Don't Type. Talk!

During the workshop, Hassey will address conflict sources and provide simple techniques and how-tos – via ground-breaking case studies, real-life success stories, open discussion, demonstrations & practice sessions – that couples can use to:

  • Alleviate and overcome conflict and other difficult situations
  • Increase their feelings of love and intimacy
  • communication for more open and honest expression

"I Do...From Vows to Reality” will also include special presentations by Anne Wagner, who will discuss the roles that fear and vulnerability play within a relationship; and The TantraNova Institute's Dr. Elsbeth Meuth and Freddy Zental Weaver – the renowned intimacy/relationship coaches who've produced best-selling videos and have been featured on the popular Showtime series, “Sexual Healing”, and NBC's Emmy-winning show, “Starting Over” – will share the secrets for finding peace and love within ourselves and our relationships.

At the conclusion of the workshop, couples will have the opportunity to schedule a private and complimentary consultation with John Hassey to review the results of their relationship evaluation and discuss possible next steps.

Freddy Zental Weaver & Dr. Elsbeth Meuth

Now through September 4, the cost per couple is $425 (starting September 5, price increases to $525). The workshop includes a pre-workshop personality/ relationship evaluation; a one-hour, post-workshop session with John Hassey; and breakfast and lunch.

For more information about John Hassey and “I Do...From Vows to Reality”, please visit:www.JohnHassey.com/ido or call (312) 884-9830.
